How to change the number of items in a component *after* configuring them.

I have a navbar at the bottom of the screen, kept it at the default three items when I created it, and now I want to add a fourth item. But I can see no way to do it. I can't seem to select the entire navbar (as I assume I would need to do to change the number of items). Instead, it simply selects one item at a a time.
