For step 1 what js do I add to the where parameter? I invoke this service with my create button, correct? Do I map anything?

First step fully depends on you. We can't imagine what type of searching do you need. It's your own application logic. For example, if you don't need users with same names, you have to add appropriate js code. But unfortunately, we can guess, what logic do you need really, it's just example.
