Connect Appery.io backend with Photoswipe gallery

Could we not have a backend database containing the URL's to the images for gallery, and still populate the photoswipe gallery from the database?

Hello! For photoswipe you have to set links for images. It's not important where these images are located (uploaded in app, stored on external site or in files DB). It's also doesn't matter where you store links. The main issue is to form direct link to image.
