2) Before you call the service you should refresh localStorage variable short_name. To do that add the following JS for the same event you use to call the service:
localStorage.setItem("short_name", '');
But am confused as to where exactly I need to add this code.(if I need to)

No, it's the second workaround.
You need to map it to other Label.
ok won't add that.
Still don't get both ItemName and carbonUnits from the first method.
You can add Grid and drop Labels inside to have data displayed in a row.
