Could you please elaborate, what exactly have you done? And what do you mean by they are not accessible for placement in visual builder?

Then I expect the icon to show up in the "Visual Builder" wherever an Icon applies to an element, eg. Button element..

For example adding a "Button" Element. Then under the "Custom - Icon" section in the Visual Builder, (Right pane) I expect the icon to show up together with the list of other icons already part of the them?

Please clarify, did you add these classes to components in the visual Builder?

I followed instructions in the "Adding custom icons to a theme" section of the doc = but I do not get the same results. But regardless...which method I tried to use, if the documentation is out-of-date - then ok.

Please provide the correct method of adding custom icons to my application?

Icons added via the method above (described in the documentation) do take effect show in the element, nor are available via the Visual Builder, so I don't really know how to debug this further at this time.

Does it matter which method of access I try? I imagine the icons should be available, same was as say custom images, backgrounds, which can be made available via a theme (file upload).

Please use CSS selector:
pre.ui-icon-delete:after/pre
instead of:
pre.ui-alt-icon.ui-icon-delete:after, .ui-alt-icon .ui-icon-delete:after/pre

Unfortunately, there is no such predefined possibility in builder.
