How do I select a grid and not the cells of the grid?

I have been frustrated to no end by not being able to select a grid. I can only select the cells. Please help fast. So annoying!

Aghhh! So annoying. Tab doesn't work. There is not list of active components to select from. Help!
The documentation almost seems to purposely avoid talking about how to select the components. I read about an orange triangle somewhere, but that never appears in my UI.
