PhoneGap's menubutton works but its backbutton does not.

I have managed to figure out how to do things with the device API (PhoneGap) and even had my backbutton working at one point (it'd take the user to either the home page or, if they were on the home page already, would exit them from the app). Today it does not seem to be working and I don't know why. I haven't made any code changes that should have affected it as best as I can tell. The backbutton previously worked on multiple devices, so I think we can rule out the device itself as being the problem.
And, just to make things more interesting, my PhoneGap menubutton works like a charm. I don't understand how it's possible for the menubutton to work but not the backbutton. As part of the debugging process I created some simple testing code, below at reference, that fires an alert message. All of the alerts work except for the backbutton one. How can that be?
Can you provide any guidance? What do I need to do to get this backbutton running again?
