Can't import re-zipped file from a backup.

Is there some reason a re-zipped file cannot be imported? I can import an unaltered zip backup file, but if I just unarchive and re-zip the same folder, it gives "BackupManager wrong format backup - metadata is missing." error.
Is there some trick to zipping the files? I really need to do this for a couple of reasons that I can explain, if needed.
