what is the meaning of $ on response tan?

As I see on javascript code on Appery.DataSource object is used on
'responseMapping': [{
'PATH': ['$'], blah blah blah

(all thoughts came by my ambition to understand how looping is created when mapping $ on grids,lists,etc)

That usually identifies the root of JSON response (or XML).
