Android Splash Screen Sizes

In the App Settings, why are the required Android Launch Image sizes all landscape-oriented yet the image placeholders appear to be portrait-oriented?

I would assume that most mobile devices are defaulted to portrait orientation so why are there no portrait-oriented launch image sizes for android?
