Under the tutorials section , in getting started. I was told to put an input button(with enter name) and check "placeholder". But in the Design screen- properties, i couldn't find any box to check it. Instead it was a blank space to enter a text .

After pressing test , the test page doesnt show the "enter name" input box. what happened?

Could you clarify what tutorial are you referring to?
You have to enter text you want to be shown as placeholder in Placeholder field on properties panel.
