Populate checkbox group with database values

I'm trying to populate a textbox group with the values of a column in my database. After reading all the posting on checkboxes with database, I think I need to connect $ to the checkbox item and the column "Category" to the text of the checkbox item in the datamapping screen. If I only link "Category" to text, the checkbox is visible, but with no text displayed. If I link $ to textbox nothing is displayed. if you have more documentation or know a slick way of doing this, I would be greatful.
