error ITMS-9000: "No .app bundles found in the package"

when I try to upload the app to iTunes Connect I get the following error message: error ITMS-9000: "No .app bundles found in the package"

I tried researching the appery.io forum and the Internet but could not find any explanation for this. Any idea what could be causing this.
