Adding a List Item to a List in the Visual Editor - How to edit List Properties

I'm trying to create a list in the visual editor. When I first create a list from the controls in the palette, it creates a default list with three items. At this point I can also edit the list properties to the right.
However after I click on the first list item, its properties are visible. Now suppose I want to edit the list property to change it to 4 list items instead.
How do I edit the list property, because clicking on any of the list items or the border just brings up the list item property instead of the list property.
