Mapping the collname for a Pointer on create/update

Is it possible to set the collname to the fixed value needed when using mapping?
Is the only way to have a scope variable for each collname and map that?
What would be useful is to be able to have the (JS) button availabel even if nothinjg is mapped to that column so you could enter the collname as a string
Update: I think I've found a workaround for this:
Set the collname to any scope string variable and then in the JS enter the collname but with no single or double quotes
