OTA Update: Android update screen is black

When pushing new updates, the iOS version of the app displays a nice friendly message that updates are being downloaded. However, on Android, the screen is just black for about a minute, then proceeds to the splash screen and main screen normally. This has caused many users to think the app is buggy, and one user had left a miserable 1-star review, due to it. The purpose of the OTA updates is to prevent multiple submissions to the stores, but with this black screen, it is almost requiring a resubmit for Google Play.
Is there a way to remedy this myself (plug-in, code adjustment, etc.), or is a built-in solution in the works? If not, I'd like to strongly suggest implementing the same kind of message as iOS.
I must have searched 20 different terms, but couldn't find a related thread.
