How are notifications normally received on Android devices? And why don't badges work?

This is probably a dumb question but I just bought my first Android device and am testing push notifications on it, and it seems weird.

I am using Galaxy Prevail 2 running 4.1.2

I had my sound off and I thought for a while that the push notifications were not being received by the device because the first time, I had the screen off. Nothing showed up on on the screen and since my sound was off I didn't know anything was received. By the time I unlocked the phone, the notification was gone.

The second time I tested, I probably just didn't see the notification because it was small and disappeared fast. Then the third, fourth, and fifth times, I was sending the same text as the second test. It seems that Android does not display the text at the top of the phone if it is a repeat. It does, however, play a sound. The moral of the story: leave your sound on for testing!

ALSO, the badges never seem to show on the icons! I don't know if this is an Appery problem or an Android thing. I installed the Facebook app and started sending messages via Facebook to see how that works. Usually, a badge appears on the Facebook icon in the list of apps, but not on the Facebook icon that is on the home screen. Is that normal Android behavior? And on my app, no badges appear in either place.
