How can I show Cardinal Directions on the Google map?

I want to add a compass sort of functionality to my google map.
i compass or anything that displays the North/South -East /West directions for my current GPS location.
Please advise any way to do this?

Please help me. In my android phone google maps are telling North/South -East /West with my account, but with other google acount it tells normally left/right.
What option in my account is needed to change to have left/right directions?

Thing is, Google Maps display is ALWAYS with North at the top of the screen so there really isn't a need for a specific Cardinal Points icon. That doesn't exactly answer how to get the directions icon to display. I guess the reason Google didn't bother to put it on the maps is it would just always display the same thing.
