Can you make salesforce api calls? If so, why does appery.io allows api calls while Justinmind Prototyper does not?

I am confused on how appery.io connects with salesforce. How are api calls made if there is no backend support? Also how can appery.io connect with salesforce if Justinmind prototyper cannot? Lastly, if I have an existing Justinmind prototype is there any way to upload the .vp file or exported html to appery.io instead of starting over?
