Can Cordova plugins still be added the old fashioned way?

I used to have couple of Cordova Plugins that work with v2.3 of the library. When I create a new app v3.0 and try to add the plugin using the plugin import feature, it shows an error that building apk failed. This plugin worked perfectly fine with v2.3. So is there a way to manually add plugin to v3.0?
