Adding permissions in AndroidManifest.xml

Some of the cordova plugins require adding permissions in the AndroidManiesft.xml file. Do we still need to add in the manifest file if we are importing the plugin using the plugin import feature? Do we need to tick the appropriate Android permissions checkboxes for different permissions?
