HTML changes not showing in designer

I am confused about the relationship between the designer and the associated HTML file.
If I edit the HTML file the changes are not shown in the designer but do appear when I test. Subsequent changes in the designer are not then reflected in the HTML. I see from previous questions that you can 'undo all source changes' from the Web Resources menu and the designer changes will then show up again in the HTML. However I do not want to undo all changes as for example css changes need to be kept.
It makes it difficult if the HTML and designer are not in step or have I got the wrong idea?

Yes, when you change Appery.io sources the changes won't be visible in builder. They're visible on preview and installed app only.

Is this likely to change in the future? It rather spoils the usability and slows development down.
A split source/design view like Visual Studio would be nice

Sorry please ignore my last comment. I had not fully understood the uses for the HTML component - I hadn't noticed the div option.

or the edit HTML, I had been using the HTML control solely for displaying content retrieved from a service.
