Salesforce Integration Tutorial, menu not functioning

Follow this tutorial (http://docs.appery.io/tutorials/sales...) to the letter, multiple times over a couple days. In test mode, the menu button slides, but there is no list items being displayed (i.e. contacts). Tried debugging it, but no luck. What is going on?
