upload file with Angularjs and store in localStorage

I want to upload a file and store it in a local storage variable.
I used the example in https://codepen.io/anon/pen/rdYLOZ?ed..., but can't figure out where I can harvest the file and how to convert that in a base64 image variable.

How do I need to set up a html control in Appery.io to get the script to work?

Any help is highly appreciated.
